Department Department of Engineering

Over 100 years of engineering research experience in Luxembourg

Seven research areas and 18 labs under one roof

Our research combines classical engineering disciplines – civil, electrical, mechanical – and more contemporary interdisciplinary themes, including computational engineering, digital twins, sustainability, water management, transport optimization, energy, and resource management. Many of our subjects address environmental issues, energy transition, and more generally prepare for Industry 4.0. We use four methodologies: theoretical, experimental, digital, and data-driven.

Tackling sustainability challenges through science and engineering

A skilled, dynamic, and stimulating research environment

The DoE covers expertise in different engineering disciplines and applies advanced methods and theories over a broad range of research and application domains. Considering the relatively limited core department staff, the DoE has focused strategy and vision, with an internal organisation onto five Research Areas (RA):

  • Production, Manufacturing & Material Engineering
  • Civil, Environmental & Geospatial Engineering
  • Energy Technology & Electrical Engineering
  • Computational Engineering & Science
  • Logistics, Operations and Supply Chain Management

The DoE has been the largest department in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine since the creation of the university in 2003. The department has its roots in the pre-existing Institute of Science and Technology, which educated and professionally formed engineers in Luxembourg for over a century. Since its creation, the DoE has fully transformed into a research-driven unit, maintaining a strong commitment and dedication to excellence in teaching, while serving the country to tackle societal, economic and environmental challenges, and contributing to position Luxembourg at the centre of the international research and education map.
