In parallel to the Recruitment on a tenure or promotion track position, the University of Luxembourg Competitive Promotion offers the opportunity every three years for eligible faculty members to advance to the next academic rank through a highly competitive and merit-based evaluation process, as defined by the Luxembourgish law. Academic achievements are assessed across the following areas: research and scholarship, teaching, knowledge and technology transfer, and administration and management. The evaluation process is designed to ensure both quality and fairness. It includes written assessments by external peers, followed by a thorough review conducted by an independent external committee of internationally recognised experts. Based on these assessments, the committee carefully evaluates all applications individually and establishes a ranking for each level of professorship. The committee’s recommendations are then confirmed by the Rector, who submits them to the Board of Governors, which makes the final decision.
78 proposals were submitted for this 2025 edition: 32 by Research Scientists, 22 by Assistant Professors, and 24 by Associate Professors. The External Evaluation Committee was impressed by the overall high quality of the proposals. However, due to the limited number of positions as defined in the Act of 27 June 2018 on the organisation of the University of Luxembourg, only the top-ranked candidates for the available positions could be promoted. On December 12, The Board of Governors validated the 18 proposed candidates, eight women and ten men, for an overall success rate of 25%.
