Why did you choose this study programme?

Max: “Given the challenges I faced in my Bachelor thesis in Physics, I was eager to find out how Machine Learning could tackle the computational problems I tried to solve. The master programme did not only propose the practical programming skills, but also the theory behind many algorithms and modeling techniques, which led me to applying to the Master in Data Science programme. Additionally, it would allow me to pursue a broader range of positions upon graduating, be it in industry or academia.”

What did you like the most?

Max: “The offered courses allowed us to build a great theoretical foundation needed to pursue a career path in the field of data science. Given that we were 17 ambitious and hard-working students and given that we were closely monitored by our professors, I found the learning environment to be very supportive and conducive to success.”

How did this Master enable you to find a new position?

Max: “Thanks to the University being well connected to industry, I was able to collaborate on a Master Thesis project with the startup Circu Li-ion, which allowed me to get a full-time position as a Data Scientist/ML Engineer in their Data & AI team. This allowed me to gain some industry experience right away while keeping the door open on pursuing a PhD. in the future.”

Why did you choose this study programme?

Wang: “I chose this programme because of its comprehensive approach to data-driven skills. It not only provided a strong foundation in theoretical knowledge but also emphasized practical deployment, covering both mathematical and computer science perspectives. For example, the courses we have, like mathematical statistics, optimization, machine learning, data mining, big data, and graph theory, etc, along with practical training projects, were instrumental in establishing a robust foundation in data science. This knowledge base and experience I got continue to play a crucial role in my daily work, allowing me to confidently apply data science principles in real-world scenarios.”

What did you like the most?

Wang: “One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the exceptional professionalism and support from all the professors. They had a remarkable ability to simplify complex concepts, making the challenging material enjoyable to learn. The small class size was a significant advantage, fostering closer connections with professors and facilitating face-to-face discussions and Q&A sessions. Another important factor is the diversity of my classmates, hailing from various countries and cultures, adding a unique dimension to the programme. Building friendships with people from different backgrounds was a special experience, and the intensive course schedule played a role in forging strong connections. Teamwork on projects and homework further strengthened these bonds, and celebrating together with a post-exam party added a memorable touch to our journey.

How did this Master enable you to find a new position?

Wang: “The impact of the master’s programme on my career has been transformative. Two years ago, I had only a superficial understanding of data science. Now, I have hands-on experience in various data science projects, published a paper on machine learning stemming from my thesis, completed an internship at LIST, and secured a position at IEE. In my current role, I apply data science skills, including machine learning and data analysis, to intelligent sensor systems. These achievements are a good testament to the excellent training I received at the University of Luxembourg.”

Why did you choose this study programme?

Maxime: “I joined the Master in Data Science the second year thanks to an agreement between the University of Luxembourg and the French engineering school Ecole des Mines de Nancy. I chose this training programme to better specialise in Data Science, since I already knew I wanted to improve my knowledge in this area. The University of Luxembourg allowed me to learn more about methods of Data Science, learn more about specialised application (with 2 lessons about medicine), and grow in an international environment.”

What did you like the most?

Maxime: “I really appreciated the diversity of courses and the possibilities to practice technical aspects, learn about the theory, and discover different areas of application (medicine, business, statistics…).”

How did this Master enable you to find a new position?

Maxime: “Practicing and working on projects allowed me to work more independently and on various topics. This adaptability helped me on my first steps in my new position and get projects with higher responsibilities quickly.”
