About Giving to the University

Support the Cancer Research Fund

Cancer claims 10 million lives each year, making it the second leading cause of death worldwide. At the University of Luxembourg, we are dedicated to both basic and applied research to understand cancer’s complexities and develop new and effective treatments. Our work targets some of the most aggressive cancers—colorectal, liver, and melanoma— allowing us to make a significant impact not only on these diseases but also on many other forms of cancer.

To provide our researchers with a secure base of funding to undertake this work, the university has established a Cancer Research Fund. By directly supporting both seasoned experts and promising new researchers, we ensure the continuous flow of groundbreaking discoveries in cancer diagnostics, treatment and prevention. We are committed to equipping future innovators with the resources needed to transform promising ideas into life-saving breakthroughs. With your support, we can reduce the global burden of cancer, beginning right here in Luxembourg.

Our work to fight cancer

Cutting-edge in vitro research

Our research is distinguished by its use of state-of-the-art in vitro models that replicate the behaviour of cancer within human tissues. This includes creating sophisticated 3D cell models that more accurately reflect the intricacies of cancer, giving us better insights into tumor growth, metastasis, and drug resistance. These models help accelerate discovery and offer a flexible and ethical foundation to tackle the most difficult aspects of cancer research with precision.

Revolutionising drug therapies

Our researchers are committed to advancing drug screening therapies that are leveraging newly discovered biomarkers to improve diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Our work focuses on finding more effective drugs for every stage of cancer, including second- and third-line therapies that prevent relapse and maintain long-term control. We are discovering ways to make existing drugs more effective, transforming cancer from a lethal disease into a manageable condition.

Building a national registry for colorectal cancer

Since 2010, the University of Luxembourg has spearheaded the creation of a national registry for colorectal cancer. Hundreds of patients have contributed tissue samples, building a collection of over 4,000 samples. This national effort supports researchers and clinicians in improving the accuracy of diagnoses and developing personalised treatments. It is a vital resource for advancing cancer care.

As dedicated cancer researchers, we are committed to advancing knowledge leading to innovative treatments that have the potential to save lives. With your support, we can accelerate breakthroughs that make a significant and lasting impact. Together, we can make a difference!”
