The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities

The University of Luxembourg is a member of The Guild, a select network of leading universities driving research and academic excellence across Europe.

Founded in 2016, The Guild comprises twenty-three of Europe’s most distinguished research-intensive universities in seventeen countries, and is dedicated to enhancing the voice of academic institutions, their researchers and their students. The Guild is committed to the pursuit of excellence, the importance of truth-seeking and trust-building as the foundation of public life, and the creation of new knowledge for the benefit of society, culture, and economic growth.

Membership provides a strong platform to influence European research and education policy, while enhancing international reputation and visibility. It also opens opportunities for collaboration, student mobility, and professional development through the exchange of knowledge and best practices with long-established universities.

    EU preference must strengthen, not undermine, international research collaboration

    The Guild is concerned that the European Commission’s proposal to apply the European Competitiveness Fund’s EU preference rules to research activities will distort international collaboration because of an unbalanced emphasis on security. In the present geopolitical context, it is urgent to strengthen international collaboration to face the ongoing power rivalry, while also protecting researchers in Europe from undue interference caused by global rupture.

    On 13 March, MEP Christian Ehler and MEP René Repasi published their draft reports for the European Parliament on the European Commission’s proposals for the Horizon Europe framework programme 2028-34 (FP10). The Guild warmly welcomes their ambition for a reform of FP10 so that it can more effectively and efficiently boost Europe’s scientific leadership, competitiveness and prosperity.
