Mathematics and beyond: creating gateways to mathematics

The members of DMATH are developing new ways to experience mathematics: puzzles and games, interactive exhibitions, artistic projects. All these initiatives aim to multiply the gateways to the discipline and reach the widest possible audience.
These activities thrive on collaborations with various actors and cultural venues (Esch2022, Rotondes, Rockhal, Neumünster Abbey…) as well as with other public partners (FNR, Ministry of Economy).
Traces
Universal Expo Osaka 2025
Mathematicians from the Universities of Luxembourg, Liège and Fribourg have collaborated to create playful and hands-on outreach, demonstrating how mathematics can foster intercultural dialogue beyond linguistic boundaries. The “Traces” project includes two dedicated interactive installations:
Life Lines invites participants to contribute to a collective artwork by adding a drawing powered by mathematics. This activity showcases the unifying power of mathematics, where individual creative expressions contribute to a shared narrative.
Patterns invites people to solve puzzles inspired by geometric designs. Through simple, yet generative rules, participants will uncover the hidden beauty of mathematical structures. This intuitive and non-verbal approach makes the workshop accessible to a young and international audience.
Sound of Data: science meets music
Esch2022 European Capital of Culture
The Sound of Data: Science Meets Music was a multifaceted, multidisciplinary and innovative project which aimed at creating bridges between the worlds of science and music. The project was centered around the topic of data sonification, which is the transformation of numerical data into sound or music.
Mathematicians played a significant role in the project to collect worldwide original digital artworks through a custom software. The data of these images was sonified in a second step, which resulted in three exquisite pieces of music.
The Simplicity of Complexity and Recreate
Universal Expo Dubai 2021-2022
On the occasion of the Luxembourg Pavillon, mathematicians from the University of Luxembourg brought mathematics to the Luxembourg pavillon at the 2020 Dubai Expo, to huge success.
In December 2021, the Simplicity of Complexity exposition featured original mathematical games in which, beyond the enjoyment of playing, visitors were invited on an exploration through intricate spaces
and to the frontiers of knowledge.
In February 2022, the exposition ReCreate was even more ambitious. With a distinctive artistic flavour, visitors were invited to participate in a crowdsourcing art project, in which artistic data were collected for the Esch 2022 project “The Sound of Data”.
