Girls Exploring Math: deconstructing gender stereotypes

High school girls participating in Girls Exploring Math (GEM) initiative visit the university to dedicate a day to mathematics and the issue of gender representation in scientific careers. They engage in discussions with professional mathematicians, discover hidden aspects of the discipline, and break down the stereotypes that connect gender with STEM.
Why a day specifically for girls? From an early age, girls are exposed to false ideas (stereotypes) and gendered behaviours that, sometimes in a subtle way, steer them away from mathematics (and technical disciplines). To counteract these years of negative influence, we aim to dedicate a modest day to empower them and assert that mathematics is for them too!
GEM Day 2023: more than 230 high-school girls play with mathematics

On 11 May 2023, the third edition of the GEM (Girls Exploring Math) Day was a great success with more than 230 girls from 11 Luxembourg secondary schools. Held on Belval Campus, the event was punctuated by many activities, games and discussions, a great occasion to celebrate the International Women in Mathematics Day!
