Steel structures for the future
The Chair binds research and real-world solutions in three axis: the research of constructional steel solutions towards sustainability and zero carbon emission by circular economy, an exploration of timber as a partner for efficient and green steel structure, and further committee work and involvement in the European standards development.

Over the past decade, the Chair of Steel Construction has achieved numerous successes, for example:
- Outstanding Mentor award of FNR and Dr. Maciej Chrzanowski, a former PhD student of the Chair received an FNR Award for his outstanding PhD thesis ‘Shear Transfer in Heavy Steel-Concrete Composite Columns with Multiple Encased Steel Profiles’. Video
- Dr. Valentino Vigneri was recognised with an award for his paper “Different load bearing mechanisms in headed stud shear connections for composite beams with profiled steel sheeting” during the Nordic Steel Construction Conference.
- Dr. Andras Kozma presented his findings on circular construction in a TEDx talk of University of Luxembourg. Video
- At the Luxembourg’s Pavillon of Expo 2020 Dubai, the Chair promoted a future vision of modular, circular, standardised steel solutions leveraging Digital Twin technologies. Video
- Shahin Sayyareh, received an award at the Eurosteel 2023 conference for his outstanding paper about Petite Maison, a circular economy project which was carried out in the framework of Esch 2022, European Capital of Culture.
- These scientific findings have recently been applied in the Pavilion “Petite Maison” which is a showcase and mock-up of recent findings.
