Study Programmes Bachelor in Psychology

Is psychology the right course for you?

Are you curious about what studying psychology entails?
Wondering if your interests, expectations and ideas about studying psychology align with the actual course content?

Here are some tips to help you get a comprehensive picture of the Bachelor in Psychology and thus increase your chances of a successful application:

  1. Explore online resources: Dive into the curricula and course descriptions of various psychology programmes. Study guides, like the one published by The German Psychological Society (available in German only), can provide valuable insights into the content and requirements of psychology studies: dgps.de/psychologie-studieren

  2. Take a self assessment: A number of universities offer online self-tests for prospective students: https://www.dgps.de/psychologie-studieren/infos-zum-studium/self-assessment-fuer-studiumsinteressierte/. For example, you can try the Online-Self-Assessment for Bachelor programs in Psychology (OSA-Psych): https://www.osa-psych.de/

  3. Read scientific literature: Familiarize yourself with foundational literature in psychology. Here are some recommended textbooks:
    • Gerrig, R.J. (2018). Psychologie (21. Auflage). Pearson Studium.
    • Schmithüsen, F. (2015). Lernskript Psychologie. Die Grundlagenfächer kompakt. Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag. (published by a former BAP student)
    • Myers, D. (2023): Psychologie (4. Auflage). Springer-Verlag.

  4. Attend Open Days and Taster Courses: Come to the University of Luxembourg’s “Journée portes ouvertes”(Open Day) in spring, where you can get a feel for the study environment by talking to students and lecturers, discovering the campus during a guided tour or attending information sessions. Or participate at the “L’Université à l’essai” week in autumn where you can attend various psychology courses. Do not hesitate to attend similar events at other universities: reflect on and compare the insights you gain from these experiences.

  5. Visit student fairs: Come and talk to us at the BAP stand during the “Foire de l’étudiant”, which takes place every year at the end of October on Campus Belval. The University of Luxembourg also attends several international student fairs: please check the page Student fairs for current dates.

  6. Talk to psychologists: Reach out to professionals in the field to learn about their work routines and their study experiences.

  7. Gain practical experience: Look for internships in institutions where psychologists work to get hands-on experience.
