To apply for a programme at the University of Luxembourg, candidates must comply with the general eligibility criteria for the chosen programme type and be selected by the study programme based on the quality of their application.

  • Required Degree

    Luxembourgish “Diplôme de fin d’études,secondaires classiques, générales ou techniques” or an equivalent diploma recognised by the Ministry of National Education of Luxembourg.

  • Documents

    In addition to the documents required for the enrolment at the University of Luxembourg, students need to submit the following documents:

    • a detailed CV showing your educational background (secondary education, any higher education, further education, etc.), your professional background (internships, student jobs, employment) and your social, cultural and sporting involvement. written either in German or in French
    • a letter of motivation in French OR German (in French if the essay is in German, and vice versa) according to the guidelines
    • an essay in German OR in French (in German if the cover letter is in French, and vice versa) according to the guidelines supporting documents to back up the information provided in the CV and the covering letter (certificates of training courses attended, stays abroad, etc.)
    • a summary table referencing all your supporting documents in order to facilitate their processing
    • the transcripts of the last 3 years of secondary school (lycée)

  • Procedure

    An admissions panel assesses and grades the application dossiers according to an evaluation grid that takes into account the academic results of the last year of secondary education, the letter of motivation, the essay, social, educational, cultural, political and sports commitments, professional experience (including internships and volunteering) in the social and educational field, as well as extra-curricular training experience. The 70 best applications receive an offer of admission. About 15 applications are placed on a waiting list. Up to 10 places are open to applicants of the lifelong learning programme, who are ranked separately.

  • Response deadlines

    • Mid-July: offers of admission for successful applications are sent out
    • End of July: information goes out to applicants on the waiting list. Applicants on the waiting list will be informed on their admission until mid-September
    • Beginning of September: rejection letters are sent out

Guidelines for the letter of motivation and the essay

The cover letter and the essay are the central elements of your application. This is your opportunity to explain why you want to study social work and for us to assess whether your expectations the reality of the programme

The letter of motivation and the essay should be written in French AND German. If the letter is written in French, the essay should be written in German, and vice versa. The application must be bilingual. Failure to do so will result in the direct rejection of the application.
The cover letter should be 1 to 1.5 pages (600-800 words) and the essay about two pages (1000-1200 words).

In your letter of motivation, you should explain in detail your personal interest in social and educational sciences and why you want to join the study programme. In your essay, you will develop a current issue topic using scientific literature and press articles.
