Admissions

To apply for a programme at the University of Luxembourg, candidates must comply with the general eligibility criteria for the chosen programme type and be selected by the study programme based on the quality of their application.

The “Bachelor in Music Education” is both a pedagogical and an artistic study programme. A good, extensive basic musical education is required, both on the instrument and in music theory (solfège). It is aimed at advanced musicians who wish to pursue a professional career as music teachers in the formal and/or non-formal sector.

In addition to the documents required for the enrolment on the University Platform, student candidates apply by submitting an application file including:

  • diplomas, certificates, or other proofs of achievement required according to the chosen field of study,
  • a motivation letter, check with the guidelines, CV and
  • a link to short music video (length 2-4 min) in which they present their musical skills.

    Specific information for this programme

    • Required Degree

      Luxembourgish “Diplôme de fin d’études,secondaires classiques, générales ou techniques” or an equivalent diploma recognised by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth.

      Musical competencies: Depending on the choice of specialisation, the conditions of admission to the study programme differ. Applicants who are not holding the required diplomas will have the possibility to participate in an audition and sit a written exam.

      Language requirements: English level C1 (CEFR), oral comprehension and expression of the three official languages of Luxembourg (Lëtzebuergësch, French and German) is an advantage

    • Documents

      In addition to the documents required for the enrolment on the University Platform, students need to submit an application letter, including a complete file with their:

      • Luxembourg secondary school diploma (or foreign diploma recognized as equivalent to the Luxembourg diploma),
      • diplomas, certificates, or other proofs of achievement required according to the chosen field of study,
      • a motivation letter and
      • a link to short music video (length 2-4 min) in which they present their musical skills.


    • Procedure

      Depending on the course of chosen specialisation (instrument, solfège, early childhood), candidates must submit a file containing the following diplomas, certificates, or other proofs of achievement.

      In the absence of the required diplomas, candidates will have the opportunity to take an audition and, if necessary, a written exam. In addition, they will participate in an interview.

      The audition, written tests and interview will take place in July.

    • Musical requirements

      Instrumental/Vocal Programme (Instrumental Training)

      • Diploma of division moyenne spécialisée (1st prize) in an instrumental branch or in singing with a mark of 50/60 pts or higher.

      If the candidates do not have the required diploma, they may attend an audition in the instrumental/vocal branch and take an admission test in solfège.

      Musical Training (Solfège)

      • Diploma of division moyenne spécialisée (1st prize) in formation musicale (solfège) with a mark of 50/60 pts or higher
      • 2nd cycle (1e mention) diploma in piano

      If the candidates do not have the required diplomas, they may attend an audition in piano and take an admission test in solfège.

      Early Childhood Music Education

      • Certificate of the division moyenne ou division moyenne spécialisée en formation musicale (solfège) with a mark of 50/60 pts or higher
        • 2nd cycle diploma in an accompanying instrument (piano, accordion, guitar, etc.)

      If the candidates do not have the required diplomas, they may attend an audition (accompanying instrument) and take an admission test in solfège.

    Letter of motivation guidelines

    The letter of motivation must include the following elements:

    • Musical experiences (max. 400 words): describe personal highlights in the field of music (e.g. competitions, important events, extraordinary concerts, compositions, personal experiences, significant encounters, …).
    • Educational experiences (max. 400 words): if applicable, describe your personal experiences in the world of formal or non-formal education, in the field of music or otherwise (e.g. scout instructor, workshop leader, camp counsellor, teacher, children’s choir, …).
    • Motivation (max. 400 words): describe the three main reasons why you choose to become a teacher and what makes you feel capable of teaching music (personal skills, role model, encouragement, …).
    • Professional perspectives (max. 400 words): describe your desired career path in music teaching, which branch(es) you would like to teach, in which context (music school, kindergarten, public school, …), which audience (children, youth, adults, …).
