The University of Luxembourg has been ranked for the first time in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, scoring 147th out of 911 universities from 94 countries or territories and 26th in Europe.
Interdisciplinarity overcomes boundaries between disciplines and sectors paving the way for the next stage in the development of international research and innovation. This concept lies at the heart of the University of Luxembourg, which has five interdisciplinary centres and an Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) supporting four dedicated funding instruments.
The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, a collaboration between Times Higher Education (THE) and Schmidt Science Fellows, aims to measure the contributions and commitment of global universities to interdisciplinary science.
Eleven metrics cover three areas: inputs (funding); processes (measures of success, facilities, administrative support and promotion); and outputs (publications, research quality and reputation). The rankings focus on “any research project that comprises multiple scientific disciplines, or one or more scientific disciplines combined with one or more of the following non-STEM disciplines: social sciences, education, psychology, law, economics, or medical and health sciences.” The global rankings and full methodology are available on the THE website.
In a related report, the European Commission ranks Luxembourg as a ‘strong innovator’ in its European Innovation Scoreboard 2025, using 33 indicators. The country ranks seventh among the EU-27, supported by the research done in the University of Luxembourg and research institutes across the country. “Measured by newly awarded doctorates, the Grand Duchy ranks first in the ranking”, notes the weekly Land in its latest publication. “For scientific publications that are particularly frequently cited, it ranks second. For publications resulting from public-private partnerships, it also ranks second. And in no other EU country is the proportion of foreign doctoral students as high as here.”
