The Welcome Day

On Friday 12 September, excitement tingled on campus Belval, as new students attended the Welcome Day.

In the morning, Rector Jens Kreisel greeted them in a classic Uni.lu way: his welcome words were held in Luxembourgish, German, French, and English.

Rector Kreisel emphasised that they will always remember their first day at university, and that people met at University will be part of their life.

Look to your left and right. Statistically speaking, your future partner could be in this room, as well as your future doctor, your child’s teachers, or even… your future astronaut partner.”

The rector reminded newcomers that student life can be challenging and assured them that the university’s student department is ready to listen and offer support. He also spoke of the mandatory semester abroad for bachelor students. Drawing on his own experience in Germany, France and England, he assured that an international experience will broaden their horizons and enrich learning and life experiences.

On a finishing note, Jens Kreisel encouraged new students to contribute in shaping campus life, by joining clubs or engaging in cultural, sports or community events.

Visitors made full use of the event, exploring the campus, connecting with fellow new students, teachers and discovering Uni.lu student services.

Amy, registered in the Bachelor in psychology, incorporates much of what Uni.lu represents: a German born in Belgium, trilingual, she visited the Uni.lu Open Day in March.

What drew me in was the international vibe of the campus and the fact that I can study in French, German and English. I’ll be able to really improve my French, that’s going to help me in my future job.”

Miyo and Soreyn at the Welcome Day 2025

For Miyu, 20, from Japan, and Soyeon, 22, from Korea, it is the first time they are Luxembourg. Excited and smiling, they are excited to see the diversity of cultures represented on campus and are looking forward to making new friends.

Carmen and Trinity are two friends from Luxembourg about to begin their Bachelor in educational sciences. Trinity, whose friends abroad told her about the difficulties of navigating large universities, especially appreciated the human size and clarity of the campus: “it’s big, but not overwhelming, and well organised.
