About Giving to the University

Supporting Women’s Advancement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Despite growing awareness of the gender gaps in science and technology, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields in Luxembourg, with effects felt across the research and innovation ecosystem. According to the European Commission, Luxembourg ranked 26th among EU countries in 2024 for the proportion of women earning doctoral degrees in STEM fields. Only 28% of scientists and engineers in the country are women and, in business sector, the gap is even wider – just 15%. Moreover, women appear on only 6.9% of patent applications. These stark statistics show that Luxembourg is underusing its
talent—a loss for science, for the economy, and for society as a whole.

The University of Luxembourg has created a Women in STEM Master’s Scholarship Fund to help close the gap. While many young women begin degrees in science and technology, far fewer continue at the Master’s level and beyond. Financial pressure, lack of recognition, and limited support networks all contribute to this drop off. With your support, we can offer targeted scholarships to help our brightest students stay the course, deepen their expertise, and prepare for leadership in research and industry.

Help us close the gap

Why the Master‘s level matters

Gender gaps in STEM begin early and widen as women advance in higher education. Many leave the field before graduate-level study—not for lack of ability, but due to mounting pressures. The transition to a Master‘s degree is a pivotal point on this path. It is where academic interests sharpen, career ambitions take shape, and future roles comes into view. Yet it is a stage where challenges intensify. Financial strain from childcare and Luxembourg‘s high cost of living – combined with the isolation of male-dominated environments – often drive women away. Scholarships at this level retain talent and send the message that women belong in STEM.

A smart investment in Luxembourg‘s future

Luxembourg‘s economy is evolving rapidly, with growth in digital innovation, biomedical research, and sustainable technologies – all of which depend on a steady pipeline of STEM professionals. Increasing the number of women in advanced STEM education will strengthen Luxembourg‘s scientific capacity, enhance its competitiveness, and contribute to a more resilient economy. With research consistently showing that diverse teams are more innovative, productive, and better positioned to solve complex challenges, supporting women in STEM can help ensure stronger science and better outcomes for all.

Scholarships early in my career provided more than
financial support – they gave me a sense of belonging in a field where women are still underrepresented and made it possible to envision a successful future in engineering. ”

How recipients are chosen

Women admitted to the participating Master’s programmes with high standing will be invited to apply for a scholarship. Applications will require two reference letters and a personal statement of motivation. This gives each candidate the opportunity to share her ambitions, experiences, and personal journey towards graduate education. Selection is based on a careful assessment of both academic merit and financial need. Priority is given to women with children, who face the most significant obstacles to continuing their studies. Final decisions are made by Study Programme Directors to ensure a fair and thoughtful process. Donors who wish to engage more closely with recipients have the opportunity to meet the selected scholars. Donors will also receive regular updates on student progress and the impact of their donation.

Join us in making a lasting impact

By supporting the Women in STEM Master’s Scholarship Fund, you can help ensure that Luxembourg’s future is shaped by the full range of its talent. Your contribution will empower outstanding students to continue their education, pursue research, and drive the discoveries and technologies of tomorrow. Together we can build a stronger and more inclusive scientific community.

How to support a scholarship

The total cost of tuition, rent, food, and other essential living expenses for a two-year Master’s degree is estimated at €50,000. A suggested minimum donation of €25,000 helps to reduce these costs by half – removing a significant barrier. We invite you to contribute to the Women in STEM Master’s Scholarship Fund and play a direct role in shaping the future of science and innovation in Luxembourg.
