Support our Alzheimer’s Research Fund

Not to be forgotten: Alzheimer’s disease

Dementia constitutes a global health crisis. More than 55 million people live with it worldwide and this number is expected to increase to 150 million by 2050. Alzheimer’s disease, the most common neurodegenerative disorder, is responsible for 60-80% of all dementia cases. It causes memory loss, cognitive decline, and profoundly alters the behaviour of affected individuals.

Despite extensive research, the biological mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s disease remain elusive and no cure exists yet. However, recent insights have opened new avenues for prevention and risk reduction. The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg is committed to addressing Alzheimer’s on multiple fronts, from early detection to innovative treatments. With your support, our researchers can drive breakthroughs that offer hope for effective prevention and improved care for those affected by this devastating disease.

Why support Alzheimer’s research?

Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of people worldwide, causing memory loss, cognitive decline and profound challenges for families and caregivers. Despite its prevalence, there is still much to understand and many breakthroughs to be made.

Alzheimer’s is not a disease of old age, as previously thought

We now know that the disease begins years, even decades, before the first clinical symptoms appear. Alzheimer’s disease is therefore not a disease of old age, as previously thought, but a disease of middle age. What is generally understood by the disease is already the “final stage” of a slow but steady process of nerve cell degeneration. For this reason, therapies are often no longer effective when clinical symptoms are already present and the condition of those affected deteriorates. The earlier therapy and secondary prevention, i.e. measures to slow down the disease process, are started, the more promising they are.

Your support will fund groundbreaking research to understand the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, develop new treatments and ultimately find a cure. This research is essential to make progress against the disease.
In addition, your donations can help develop methods for early detection and prevention, which are critical to interventions that can delay or even prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Our research priorities are

  • Understanding the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s: Our researchers are uncovering the biological processes that cause Alzheimer’s disease. By studying molecular and cellular pathways involved in brain dysfunction, they aim to identify key targets for treatment.
  • Identifying differences between men and women: Alzheimer’s affects women more frequently than men. Our researchers are investigating the aging brain to uncover gender-specific genetic differences that influence the disease’s pathology.
  • Finding innovative therapies: The fundamental work carried out by our team constitutes a strong foundation for the development of treatments that can slow or halt Alzheimer’s progression. These new therapies offer hope to families and have the potential to transform millions of lives.
  • Increasing awareness and prevention of Alzheimer’s: Prevention is critical in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Our research points to specific lifestyle changes and interventions to reduce risk of developing the disease. It also explores early detection methods. Additionally, LCSB scientists regularly engage in outreach activities to inform the public and raise awareness about the disease.

Thank you for joining us on this important journey!

By contributing to the University of Luxembourg’s Alzheimer’s Research Fund, you will support crucial efforts to better understand the causes of Alzheimer’s, develop new treatments, and improve the lives of patients and their families. Your support plays a key role in advancing our research and we invite you to join us in this collective effort to address one of the most pressing health challenges of our time.

Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease, but through research, we have the potential to change its course. Every step forward brings us closer to understanding and ultimately defeating it. The support of generous donations is critical for scientific progress: Together we can turn hope into reality for those affected.

In September 2013 the Luxembourg University Foundation was launched. The Foundation’s objectives are to support the academic and scientific activities, as well as initiatives of general interest of the University.

The Luxembourg University Foundation has been granted an initial capital of one million euros and has been placed in the professional care of the Fondation de Luxembourg, which will provide financial and operational management, as well as supervision.

It is also hoped that the Foundation will assist the University in attracting additional international funding.

Our Fundraising charter (in French, PDF) provides additional information regarding patronage activities and corporate philanthropy.
