For the first time, the University of Luxembourg is ranked in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings and scored n°147 out of 911 universities from 94 countries or territories, and 26th in Europe. Interdisciplinarity overcomes boundaries between disciplines and sectors to unlock the next steps in international research and innovation development. It is at the core of the University of Luxembourg, with five interdisciplinary centres and an Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) with four dedicated funding instruments

The Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, a collaboration between Times Higher Education (THE) and Schmidt Science Fellows, intends to measure global universities’ contributions and commitment to interdisciplinary science. Eleven metrics cover three areas: inputs (funding); process (measures of success, facilities, administrative support and promotion); and outputs (publications, research quality and reputation). Its focus on “any research project that comprises multiple scientific disciplines, or one or more scientific disciplines combined with one or more of the following non-STEM disciplines: social sciences, education, psychology, law, economics, or medical and health.”
