Support our Rare Childhood Disease Research Fund

Rare diseases – not so rare all together!

Rare diseases may be uncommon but their impact is profound. 300 million people globally live with a rare disease, including 30,000 in Luxembourg. For children suffering from these conditions, diagnosis is a long and difficult journey, and effective treatments are scarce.

At the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg, Prof. Carole Linster and her team tackle rare childhood diseases on multiple fronts – genetics, enzyme deficiencies, molecular analyses, cellular biology and more. Their research is driven by advanced science and a commitment to improving lives. With your support, they can make discoveries that bring hope and opportunity to children and their families.

Cutting-edge interdisciplinary research

  • Innovative approaches: The LCSB researchers address the challenge of limited patient samples and research funding by exploring innovative ways to repurpose drugs already approved for other conditions. Their approach helps to overcome the lack of funding for expensive phase 1 clinical trials and accelerate progress towards treatments.
  • New techniques for genetic research: From cell cultures to organoids, our researchers rely on sophisticated techniques to better understand rare childhood diseases caused by genetic mutations. Using models such as zebrafish to identify key genetic mutations and elucidate disease mechanisms helps advance treatments for devastating illnesses.
  • International collaborations: Our work thrives on collaboration. The LCSB exchanges knowledge, ideas, and experimental resources with researchers, medical professionals, and diagnostic specialists worldwide. We regularly host specialists for extended stays in Luxembourg. This global network keeps us at the forefront of rare childhood disease research.

Hope starts with your support!

The University of Luxembourg fosters a collaborative environment where leading researchers are dedicated to tackling the challenges of rare childhood diseases. Your support will help drive scientific progress, develop new treatments and bring hope to children with rare diseases. Together, we can make a meaningful difference.

I have witnessed the transformative impact private donors can make. Every discovery drives progress, every treatment changes lives, and every child deserves a future filled with promise. At the LCSB, we are dedicated to turning hope into tangible solutions and creating lasting change for children and families.”

In September 2013 the Luxembourg University Foundation was launched. The Foundation’s objectives are to support the academic and scientific activities, as well as initiatives of general interest of the University.

The Luxembourg University Foundation has been granted an initial capital of one million euros and has been placed in the professional care of the Fondation de Luxembourg, which will provide financial and operational management, as well as supervision.

It is also hoped that the Foundation will assist the University in attracting additional international funding.

Our Fundraising charter (in French, PDF) provides additional information regarding patronage activities and corporate philanthropy.

Thank you for your interest in supporting our research at the LCSB!
