Schreibwissenschaft (Book series)

The series, associated with the Austrian Association for Academic Writing GewissS (Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliches Schreiben), includes theoretical and empirical studies from the field of writing research. The aim of the series is both to offer a forum for publications in the field and to help raise the profile of writing research. The Schreibwissenschaft series contains both monographs and anthologies. Book proposals are welcome. To ensure high academic quality, the series will be supported by an international advisory board of recognised experts.

Volume 1

Huemer, B., Lejot, E., & Deroey, K. (2019). Academic writing across languages: Multilingual and contrastive approaches in higher education (Schreibwissenschaft; Band 1). Vienna: Böhlau. The book aims to develop concepts for teaching academic writing in multilingual environments by exploring how academic writing varies across languages. Contributions are in English, German and French.

Volume 2

Huemer, B. et al. (2020). Schreibwissenschaft – eine neue Disziplin. Diskursübergreifende Perspektiven. (Schreibwissenschaft; Band 2). Vienna: Böhlau. The second anthology in the series is the result of a symposium held at Alpen-Adria University in Klagenfurt, Austria, in May 2019 in cooperation with the University of Luxembourg. The book presents theoretical and methodological approaches to academic writing in German from various disciplines. It explores the question of how far academic writing can establish itself as an (inter-)discipline for academic contexts.

Volume 3

Huemer, B. et al. (2023). Neue Perspektiven auf Schreibberatung. (Schreibwissenschaft; Band 3). Vienna: Böhlau. The book aims to bring together different and new perspectives on writing consultancy and thus contribute to a further theorisation of this diverse and dynamic area of writing support.

The book has also received the Outstanding Book Award 2024 by the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA).

    Volume 4 – Announcement

Knorr, D. (2025). Schreibberatung. Eine Systematik. (Schreibwissenschaft; Band 4). Vienna: Böhlau. This book will aim to clearly present diverse requirements for writing consultants, based on a systematic approach to academic writing, and contextualise said requirements in various specialist discourses, brought together in a writing science perspective.
