In her doctoral thesis, Birgit Huemer explored multimodally designed interactive media and digital artworks and developed a model for
Kunstbetrachtung (art perception) based on systemic functional linguistics and multimodal theory. Since 2006, she has dedicated her research to academic writing in multilingual contexts, and to text and discourse analysis with a focus on digital and social media genres. She has published numerous books, book chapters, and journal articles on these topics. She is co-editor of the book series
Schreibwissenschaft (Writing Studies), Vice-President of the
Austrian Association for Academic Writing (GewissS), Board Member of the
Luxembourg Association of German Studies (LGV), and reviewer for academic journals such as the European Journal for Applied Linguistics (De Gruyter), Language Teaching for Young Learners (Benjamins), and the European Writing Centers Association.
