Birgit HUEMER

Birgit Huemer is an Assistant professor in Linguistics and the Director of the University of Luxembourg Language Centre.

In her doctoral thesis, Birgit Huemer explored multimodally designed interactive media and digital artworks and developed a model for Kunstbetrachtung (art perception) based on systemic functional linguistics and multimodal theory. Since 2006, she has dedicated her research to academic writing in multilingual contexts, and to text and discourse analysis with a focus on digital and social media genres. She has published numerous books, book chapters, and journal articles on these topics. She is co-editor of the book series Schreibwissenschaft (Writing Studies), Vice-President of the Austrian Association for Academic Writing (GewissS), Board Member of the Luxembourg Association of German Studies (LGV), and reviewer for academic journals such as the European Journal for Applied Linguistics (De Gruyter), Language Teaching for Young Learners (Benjamins), and the European Writing Centers Association.

Birgit Huemer teaches at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, offering courses in academic writing, applied linguistics, multilingualism, multimodality, and text and discourse analysis.

Birgit Huemer has received the IWCA Outstanding Book Award 2024 as co-editor of the third volume, Neue Perspektiven auf Schreibberatung (New Perspectives on Writing Consultation), in the series Schreibwissenschaft (Writing Studies). She was awarded the Publication Fund of the University of Vienna and the City of Vienna (MA 7) for her doctoral thesis in 2013, and a one-year research grant for her doctoral thesis in 2009 (F-390) from the University of Vienna.

Before joining the University of Luxembourg in 2014, Birgit Huemer worked as a lecturer at universities in Austria, Germany, Romania, and Croatia, and as a Research Associate at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Vienna.

Birgit Huemer completed her PhD in Linguistics at the University of Vienna in 2010. She studied German Literature, Linguistics, and Mathematics at the University of Vienna. She spent half a year at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, with a short research stay abroad grant from the University of Vienna.
