LetzPower! is giving households across Luxembourg the tools to take control of their electricity use, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint – all while contributing to cutting-edge research on the smart grids of the future.

Running the dishwasher after dinner is a habit in many households. But in a world of dynamic electricity pricing, that routine might be costing more than you realise. By knowing when electricity is cheaper and cleaner to use, households can save money, lower emissions, and help balance the grid. That’s exactly what the LetzPower! app is designed to do. Today, LetzPower! invites participants to join its 8-week study, in exchange for cashback voucher rewards, as part of market research helping to optimise the app.

Smarter choices, real rewards

Funded by the Fondation Enovos under the aegis of Fondation de Luxembourg and supported by SnT at the University of Luxembourg, LetzPower! is a free mobile app that helps households understand when electricity is cheapest, cleanest to use, and locally sourced.

The eight-week study begins on 20 October, and participants can earn GoGift cashback vouchers based on their engagement and energy savings.

“The app helps users understand the changing world of electricity use”, summarises Lorenzo Matthias Burcheri, Doctoral researcher at SnT.

“The experiment checks if users change their behaviour based on these signals. This helps with flexibility in systems, society, and the environment,” adds the researcher.

At the dawn of smart grids

The parent project, FlexBeAn, started in 2022 with support from Creos Luxembourg. It explored how flexible energy use can help power the smart grids of the future – a vital step as Luxembourg moves towards cleaner electricity, more renewable energy integration, and the rise of electric vehicles, solar panels, and heat pumps.

By shifting energy use to greener, cheaper times, households can help balance the electricity grid and reduce strain during peak demand, making the whole system more efficient. LetzPower! builds on this by working directly with households, showing how everyday choices, like when to run the washing machine, can make a real difference.

How to take part?

Participation is open to:

  • Luxembourg residents aged 18 and over
  • Households with an activated Smarty+ smart meter
  • One LetzPower! account per household (as reimbursements are based on household energy behaviour)

About the project

LetzPower! is a joint research project by SnT’s FINATRAX and UBIX groups.

FINATRAX or the Digital Financial Services and Cross-Organisational Digital Transformations is an SnT research group exploring the intersection of digital technologies, business models, and regulation. The team investigates topics such as blockchain, digital identities, and artificial intelligence, with applications in finance, mobility, and the public sector. By bridging technology and policy, FINATRAX supports organisations in developing trustworthy, future-ready digital solutions.

UBIX, or the Ubiquitous and Intelligent Systems group, is an SnT research group focusing on making cities smarter, safer, and more sustainable. UBIX develops digital twins, advanced monitoring systems, and predictive models for urban infrastructure. Their research helps improve energy efficiency, resilience, and the long-term management of buildings and critical city systems.
