Research Doctoral Education

Admission and funding

At our university, the majority of our doctoral candidates,

  • Either have a contract and are employed by the university, giving them dual status as both employees and students.
    • Contracts are typically for 36 months (3 years) with a possible extension of 12 months. The thesis must be submitted within a maximum of 48 months (4 years) from the start date of the studies.
    • A contract may be based either on a structural position at the University (with assistants to professors) or on external funding (e.g. from the FNR as individual/group funding). Depending on the source of funding, the budget and the rules on how to use it may differ slightly.
  • Or are employed by the Luxembourg institutes, including the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), and the Luxembourg institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER).

A smaller percentage is self-funded. It is possible to begin doctoral studies on a self-funded basis, but it’s important to know that the requirements are exactly the same for all doctoral candidates enrolled at the university. The only difference is that the duration of the studies may be extended from 48 months to 96 months for self-funded, part-time candidates.
