Our mission

As a specialized research library, the LCEL Library serves as a central hub for European law, fostering academic excellence in this interdisciplinary field. It achieves this by offering modern collections and facilities, as well as up-to-date services and technology, to support library research for individuals both within and beyond the LCEL, the Department of Law of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, the University of Luxembourg community, and the public at large.

Our history

The LCEL Library originates from the library of the Max Planck Institute for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law (MPI) established in Luxembourg in late 2012.

In the early years, the MPI Library quickly developed an outstanding collection supporting the research activities of the Institute and became over the years one of the 10 biggest libraries in the Grand Duchy (see page 78).

After the integration of the Max Planck Institute into the University of Luxembourg as Luxembourg Centre of European Law (LCEL) in 2024, the LCEL Library continues to serve the newly created Interdisciplinary Centre with the same mission as specialised research library.

The LCEL Library remains at the heart of the new Centre and offers a collection of around 70.000 books, journals, and electronic resources for legal research.
