From 25 to 29 September 2023, 13 doctors in training who have started their specialisation studies in general medicine, neurology and medical oncology at the University of Luxembourg participated in the welcome week on Limperstberg campus.

This week started with the welcome day of DES en médecine générale introduced by Prof. Paul Heuschling and Dr. Nico Haas. Students attended all essentials lectures before the start of their clinical stage in October. They had the opportunity to learn more about essential topics such as role and function, clinical reasoning, prevention, emergency management. In addition, they received key information about their statute, exams, prescriptions, social security, doctor’s kit, the management of their portfolio and their research year.

This week was also a good place for newcomers and teachers to get to know each other and do networking for future collaboration. Representatives from the “Association Luxembourgeoise des Médecins en Voie de Spécialisation” (ALMEVS) gave some advice and tips for new doctors to be well prepared and accompanied during their studies.

The week ended with speeches from Prof. Gilbert Massard and Prof. Simone Niclou, respectively Director of Medical Studies and Vice-rector for Research. They underlined the importance of these trainings and congratulated the new students who recently arrived. They took the opportunity to announce a great news concerning their academic title.

Indeed, the Higher Education Act of 21 July 2023 precises that the “Diplôme d’études spécialisées” in Medicine is a specialised professional qualification aimed at authorising the practice of general medicine, neurology, and medical oncology. It is delivered on a full-time basis with a duration of 4 or 5 years leading to the academic title of Doctor in Medicine.

Participants could then exchange in an informal way during the cocktail.
