About

Healthcare is among the fastest evolving sectors in terms of technological innovation, yet university medical curricula do not always align with this evolution, often addressing only a single domain. This creates a gap between the skills required in the labour market and those offered by universities. Despite the rapid expansion of the European digital health sector, fewer than 20% of medical curricula integrate training in emerging technologies, highlighting an urgent need for reform. METIS is a European initiative that responds directly to this challenge by aiming to future proof medical education through the strengthening of digital readiness, ethical awareness, and social resilience among university students and staff. Bringing together universities from Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Norway, in collaboration with Web2Learn (Greece), METIS develops innovative teaching and learning approaches designed to address the accelerating digital transformation of healthcare. To stimulate innovation in medical education, METIS delivers a series of online workshops, a hackathon, a winter school, and digital storytelling activities, fostering creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the responsible use of emerging technologies. In parallel, METIS lays the groundwork for a future interdisciplinary master’s programme in medicine at the University of Luxembourg. By developing a prototype curriculum that integrates digital competence, ethics, and social responsibility, the project offers a scalable model for 21st century medical education across Europe. Through this integrated approach, METIS aims to equip future and current medical professionals with the competencies needed to navigate an increasingly digital, ethical, and socially complex healthcare landscape.
