The Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery Sciences is developed by academic experts in collaboration with healthcare professionals who have a deep understanding of the healthcare needs in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Europe.

This programme is managed by the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine. The academic team is made up of expert professors in midwifery from the University and partner universities and research institutions.

This Bachelor’s degree enables the development of skills rooted in midwifery sciences and promotes evidence-based practice in the professional fields of the midwifery profession. It also aims to promote interprofessional collaboration to ensure patient safety.

Innovative Pedagogy

This programme combines theoretical training using innovative and interactive methods with practical training in various healthcare settings. It also includes learning in simulation laboratories, shared with other disciplines.

What is a midwife?

A midwife is an autonomous regulated healthcare professional (Male or female) specialists in physiological childbirth with prescribing power limited to their field of expertise. He/she provides medical care and support for the pregnant woman throughout pregnancy, during labour & delivery and after childbirth

Responsibilities include:

  • Periconceptional care, support and guidance
  • Clinical follow-up of pregnancy
  • Screening for antenatal pathology, mental health issues / addictions, domestic violence and other fragilities that may occur during pregnancy
  • Preparing future mothers and couples about delivery, care of the newborn child and parenting advice
  • Support, guidance and medical care during labour especially with regards to pain management and screening for pathology
  • Delivering babies and immediate medical care of the mother & newborn
  • Screening for pathological situations and managing medical emergencies in collaboration with doctors
  • Medical care and screening of newborns including guidance to parents about care and prevention
  • Providing medical information on breastfeeding, contraception, sexual health issues and prevention
  • Prescription of a limited number of medications and biological tests / exams
  • Pelvic floor re-education / rehabilitation after childbirth

Midwives are essential to maternal and newborn health. They are experts in physiology, salutogenesis (promotion of health and wellbeing) before, during and after childbirth and the screening for the presence of pathology. They work in collaboration with medical doctors and other healthcare professionals in the event of a pathology being present and are the only professionals authorised by law to provide antenatal classes to prepare future mothers for childbirth.
