About
POLINDEX aims to provide an annual, non-partisan, and scientific account of potential transformations in the individual and collective values (and their consequences in terms of social cohesion and political legitimacy) of Luxembourgish citizens and foreign residents in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The goal is to obtain research results related to attitudes towards democracy, institutions, and civil society organizations, and to build a sociocultural, socioeconomic, and sociopolitical database on the determinants of voting, political behaviors, and social representations to improve decision-making in Luxembourg and Europe. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Philippe POIRIER, holder of the Parliamentary Studies Research Chair, the questionnaire was constructed based on three fundamental theoretical models in political sociology: a) The study of cleavages according to the model of American political scientist Seymour M. LIPSET and Norwegian political scientist Stein ROKKAN; b) Individuation according to the model of Swiss analytical psychologist Carl Gustav JUNG; c) The materialist/post-materialist perspective according to the model of American sociologist Ronald INGLEHART. Operationally, the ILRES MyPanel is the survey base. To date, it includes 17,000 members. Recognized both nationally and internationally, it allows for representative surveys of the resident population via the Cawi system (Computer Assisted Web Interview), considering the penetration of the internet in Luxembourg. The profile variables used in setting up the initial sample are age, gender, region of residence, nationality, and employment status (yes vs no). The distribution of residents according to these variables aligns with the official statistics from Statec (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) each year. The 1,500 surveyed individuals (1,000 Luxembourgish voters and 500 foreigners), compensated with 10 to 15 euros, will answer a questionnaire lasting 30 to 40 minutes, composed of 80 questions available in German, English, French, and Luxembourgish. The questionnaire, developed by the Parliamentary Studies Research Chair and partially incorporating questions from past Elect & Euro studies (2004, 2009, 2013 & 2014, 2018 & 2019) and the European Values Study 2021, will integrate any specific requests from the Chamber of Deputies each year if necessary. The questions have been made comparable to similar surveys conducted in Europe, such as the Political Confidence Barometer by Cevipof of the Institute of Political Studies in Paris. The survey fieldwork is always conducted in May. The research notes will be made public and accessible on the Chamber of Deputies’ website and the Parliamentary Studies Research Chair’s website by October 15th, adhering to intellectual property rules.
