UniTalks is a lunchtime series that gives you the chance to discover and discuss interesting projects going on at the University.
This November, Dive into the world of sport analytics with Prof. Christophe Ley, Associate Professor in Mathematics. This online lunchtime session, which is open to all, will bridge the gap between the football field and the data behind it.
Abstract
This talk will provide a gentle introduction to the growing world of sport analytics.
After talking about its genesis and giving some striking examples from professional sports, Prof. Ley will describe how we can use probability distributions to model the outcomes of football matches.
He will also show how this can be combined with machine learning procedures to predict big tournaments and even outperform bookmakers.
He will conclude with an outlook on how these findings can be translated to sports medicine and, in particular, the estimation of injury risks.
