One of the largest and most active student association shaping campus life, SAUL is known for organising events and running the Student lounges in Belval and Kirchberg. A portrait by managers Anne Virgili and Vidiam Moreau.
The Student Association for University Campus Life (SAUL) is actually older than the University itself. Its predecessor was founded in 1983, though it underwent several changes in name and structure over the years, as former president Vidiam Moreau explains. It’s in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced several student associations to merge, that the association in its current format is created.
After this difficult time, the association worked hard to stay in business, and grew to a peak of 40 members, and it now organises more events than ever, enriching campus life with both large-scale parties and regular, smaller gatherings. The largest events have welcomed up to 2,000 participants – close to a third of the student community!
Information about their latest events and most recent updates can be found on their Instagram page, as well as across both University campuses, through flyers and posters.
In creating more campus-life events, they want to offer a true third space: a place to meet, away from one’s home that is neither classroom, nor library.
‟ At the Student Lounge, everyone is welcome. The goal is togetherness, a place to relax and be comfortable, for students to do what they want. It’s a place to be loud, play kickers, video game, jam on the guitar…”
SAUL members help newcomers when they can – including showing some of the secret passages on campus! – or refer them to the IT Student Desk or SEVE Student Services.
Their experience has paid off, as they can now rely on strong and reliable team dynamics, smoother event organisation, improved security, and a high level of mutual trust. The association is always looking for new recruits who fit the group dynamic. “The sometimes ungrateful work and long evenings mean that we would only do this if we are genuinely friends and here to support one another. We look for members who can sustain the motivation for the challenging event planning work we do.”
Feedback is important to them: “Come to the parties! Every party feedback is useful, and we read it all.” Although not all feedback can be implemented!
The Student Lounges are open daily from 12.00 to 16.00 (except during exam periods), and later if an associative member is present.
