“Utopia Takeover”

The 25 November is the United Nations designated day for the elimination of violence against women and girls.

As part of Orange Week 2024 in Luxembourg different entities including the University of Luxembourg are coming together to brazenly take over the narrative of every single cinema screen of Ciné Utopia, putting the spotlight on the topic of domestic violence.

On this special evening , the exterior of the cinema will be bathed in Orange and every screen in this cinema will feature “Breathing Underwater”- an emotional, character-driven drama set in the world of a women’s shelter. It is a film of hope, solidarity and strength that takes us into the lives of Emma, Khadij, Esperanza and Sascha.

After the screenings, the cinema audience will be invited to a reception, hosted right next door at Porta Nova. There, participating organisations will have information booths set up to raise awareness, share their good work, strike up great conversations and build their networks.

As a sign of solidarity to mark Orange Week, the audience are encouraged to come dressed with a touch of orange.

Synopsis
Breathing Underwater tells the story of Emma, who is whisked away in the dead of night, covered in bruises and unexpectedly pregnant. As she grapples with her pregnancy and her emotional shackles to her husband Marc, Emma rediscovers lost facets of herself through her unlikely camaraderie and strife with the women and children of the shelter.
Individual traumas intertwine and despite their differences, a delicate sisterhood emerges as they push one another to fight for their self-worth and independence.
