Step 1: Get prepared

We highly recommend to prepare your mobility semester one academic year before your departure.

You will need to get informed on When and Where to study abroad, and all the pre-requisites of the different Erasmus+ partner universities for your study programme.

As Bachelor students, you will need to participate at a mandatory info session concerning the mobility semester, offered during our Study Abroad Day (every year in November – 2nd Thursday of the month). Master students are welcome to participate as well.

When? Semester abroad

Bachelor students: usually semesters 3, 4 or 5 (depending on your study programme)

First year students: academic criteria

  • If you wish to plan your mobility semester for a departure in semester 3: You need to have obtained minimum 15 ECTS during semester 1.
  • If you wish to plan your mobility semester for a departure in semester 4: You need to have obtained minimum 10 ECTS during semester 1.

Master students: usually semester 3 (to be verified depending on your study programme)

The number of Erasmus+ spots is limited per academic year, study programme and receiving institution. Find all the details on the Erasmus+ publisher

How to choose your receiving institution?

Consult the institutions’ websites, you have to find the pages dedicated to International study exchanges within the Erasmus+ programme ,  “Incoming students”.

And then verify:

  • the course catalogue for your studies. Remember that Bachelor students are obliged to select courses with a total of 30 ECTS at the receiving institution.
  • the teaching language (you must have an adequate language level of min. B2), careful: more and more universities are asking for an official language test, such as TOEFL, IELTS etc…

Please note that at some institutions, there might not be enough courses offered in a language you speak, and that you might not be able to follow courses for a total of 30 ECTS (which is mandatory for Bachelor students). For example, in Italy or Spain, you may have to follow courses held in Italian or Spanish. Therefore, make sure you have the required language skills.

  • the right semester: some partner institution can receive exchange students only during the winter semester or only during the summer, so please verify that your mobility semester matches with the partner institution’s restriction.
  • the academic calendar: some partner institutions do not have the same academic calendar as the University of Luxembourg: for example, in France the summer semester begins in early January when the exam period is not yet finished at the University of Luxembourg. In most cases, missing the beginning of classes at the receiving university is however not acceptable!
  • the study campus: a partner institution might offer courses on different campuses which might be located further away from the main study location. Make sure you check where the courses for your study programme are taught, so that there are no unpleasant surprises.
  • the living costs (food, accommodation, hobbies): bear in mind that the living costs are not the same in every European country and city. For example, the Northern European countries have higher living costs than Southern European countries. Information on the cost of living is often given on the partner institutions’ websites.
