Research project LetzPower!

Luxembourg’s Clean Energy Future

Be part of a groundbreaking research project that rewards you for making smarter energy choices at home.

Want to help us power the future?

LetzPower! is a research initiative funded by the Fondation Enovos, dedicated to accelerating the decarbonisation of Luxembourg’s energy system. The project focuses on helping households across Luxembourg make smarter energy choices at home.

How to join the study ?

Participation is open to Luxembourg residents aged 18 and over, with one account per household. To join, your home must be equipped with an activated Smarty+ device.

What you’ll need to do:

  • Participate in an 8-week study period
  • Provide your consent through the registration form  and account creation form in the LetzPower! app
  • Activate LetzPower! as a third-party service provider in your Smarty+ application
  • Download and use the LetzPower! app regularly to view electricity spot market prices and emissions data
  • Manually provide your consumption profile if technical issues prevent automatic access to your data
  • Take part in a short post-experiment survey

Why take part ?

Every kilowatt counts – Using electricity during peak renewable hours helps lower emissions and accelerates Luxembourg’s path to a greener tomorrow.

Real-time energy insights at your fingertips – track the cheapest hours to use electricity and get tailored tips to save more.

  • Get a reward – Based on the participants’ reactions to information signals, they receive a cashback via vouchers (GoGift2). This simulates a real-world dynamic electricity tariff, meaning electricity consumption is based on a dynamic economic incentive. The value of the vouchers may vary depending on actual user behaviour, as households can be remunerated for changes in consumption weighted by the price differences that are achieved by conserving energy or shifting consumption from a high-price period to a low-price period. The guaranteed minimum voucher value is 20 EUR. The vouchers’ upper limit of 70 EUR is subject to the participant’s consumption behaviour. Vouchers are non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash. Vouchers are calculated and paid out upon the availability of participants’ consumption profiles.
  • The vouchers have a fixed value and offer flexibility in how they can be used:
    • The GoGift voucher can be redeemed for a wide selection of brand-specific gift cards.
    • You can choose to split the value of your GoGift voucher across multiple brands, depending on your preferences.
    • The available brands vary by country, so the selection you see will be tailored to your country of residence.

Be part of the energy revolution – Joining research experiments on dynamic electricity consumption empowers you to shape the future of smart, sustainable energy. Your participation helps test innovative solutions that make the grid greener, more efficient, and more affordable for everyone. Plus, you’ll gain personalised insights to optimise your own energy use – saving money while supporting a cleaner Luxembourg.

What you will need to know before joining ?

Participants will be randomly assigned to groups and receive different app features over time. We’ll track electricity use with Smarty+ devices (smartyplus.lu) to see how information affects behaviour.  If Smarty+ tracking runs into issues during the experiment, households can securely upload their data manually. All participants who share their data will receive a voucher reward based on their engagement after the experiment.

  • The Smarty+ is a device that is connected to your smart meter. After you give your consent, we can access your electricity consumption data via Smarty+. This is necessary so we can evaluate your household’s consumption patterns.

  • The study will begin on XX October XXXX and run for a total of 8 weeks.
  • In the first two weeks, no app features will be activated — during this period, we’ll simply monitor energy consumption using the Smarty+ device to understand typical household usage patterns.
  • From week three onwards, participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Each group will gradually receive different app features, introduced in varying orders, to help guide flexible electricity use and test different approaches.
  • At the end of the 8 weeks, the project team will wrap up the study, analyse the results, and start distributing participant rewards.

The project behind the study

With new European regulations introducing flexible electricity pricing, we are developing and testing an easy-to-use information system (smartphone application for Android and iOS) to support households in managing their daily electricity consumption more efficiently.

The LetzPower! smartphone app is thoughtfully designed based on the preferences of Luxembourgish households, as revealed by a comprehensive national consumer survey conducted in 2024. It equips users with a powerful suite of features to help navigate the complexities of energy consumption under dynamic electricity pricing. Through an innovative experimental rollout, households will gain access to different tools and insights – tailored to randomised user groups and schedules.

Key features include:
• Spot market prices for electricity supply
• Carbon footprint indicators
• Luxembourg’s generation share
• Personalised and aggregated consumption signals based on spot market price, carbon footprint, and Luxembourg’s generation share
• Smart notifications to guide energy decisions

LetzPower! transforms how households interact with energy – making consumption more transparent, sustainable, and cost-effective.

A dynamic electricity tariff is a pricing system in which the cost of electricity varies throughout the day. Instead of paying a fixed rate, the price you pay depends on when you use electricity. The aim is to encourage people to shift their energy use to times when it is cheaper and more abundant, such as when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

Hourly real-time pricing is a specific type of dynamic tariff. In this pricing approach, the price of electricity changes every hour based on actual market conditions. These prices are typically published a day in advance, allowing households to plan their energy use—such as running the dishwasher or charging an electric car—when electricity is at its cheapest.
