The project at a glance
About
The 5GDrive project, led by SnT at the University of Luxembourg along with collaborators POST Luxembourg and Ohmio, targets the ambitious goal of developing and validating a tele-operated driving system for autonomous vehicles utilizing cutting-edge 5G technology. This project uniquely blends industrial and experimental research to exploit 5G’s potential for transmitting real-time high-definition video and sensor data, as well as remote vehicle control, ensuring low latency and high throughput critical for the operational success of autonomous vehicles.
The project’s methodology involves a systematic approach, beginning with the development of a prototype that will integrate these 5G capabilities. Extensive testing is planned across various stages, initially in controlled laboratory environments to refine the system based on controlled data, followed by trials in real-world urban settings to mimic actual operating conditions. These tests aim to rigorously evaluate the prototype’s reliability, responsiveness, and overall safety.
The project is structured to provide comprehensive insights into the integration of 5G technology within the automotive industry. It is expected to push the boundaries of current knowledge and technology, leading to advancements in the tele-operated control of vehicles. The project outcomes are anticipated to significantly influence future academic research and commercial strategies, paving the way for the next generation of autonomous vehicle technology.
Upon completion, the project will produce detailed documentation of its findings, which will be shared with the broader scientific community and industry stakeholders in Luxembourg and beyond. This dissemination aims to foster further technological adoption and stimulate ongoing innovation in 5G applications, benefiting a wide range of sectors beyond automotive, such as mobile communications and intelligent transport systems.
