Research project LetzPower!

Help Shape Luxembourg’s Clean Energy Future

Be part of a groundbreaking research project that rewards you for making smarter energy choices at home.

What is LetzPower ?

LetzPower! is a research initiative funded by the Fondation Enovos, dedicated to accelerating the decarbonisation of Luxembourg’s energy system. The project focuses on helping households across Luxembourg make smarter energy choices at home.

With new European regulations introducing flexible electricity pricing, we are developing and testing an easy-to-use information system to support families in managing their daily electricity consumption more efficiently.

A dynamic electricity tariff is a pricing system in which the cost of electricity varies throughout the day. Instead of paying a fixed rate, the price you pay depends on when you use electricity. The aim is to encourage people to shift their energy use to times when it is cheaper and more abundant, such as when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

Hourly real-time pricing is a specific type of dynamic tariff. In this system, the price of electricity changes every hour based on actual market conditions. These prices are typically published a day in advance, allowing households to plan their energy use—such as running the dishwasher or charging an electric car—when electricity is at its cheapest.

Why you should get involved ?

Use power when renewables are most available to cut emissions and support a clean energy transition in Luxembourg.

Discover when electricity is cheapest and get personalised recommendations to lower your bills.

Cashback rewards

Based on the participants’ reactions towards information signals, they receive a cashback via vouchers (e.g., Amazon). This simulates a real-world dynamic electricity tariff, meaning electricity consumption is based on a dynamic economic incentive. The value of the vouchers may vary depending on actual user behaviour, as households can be remunerated for changes in consumption weighted by the price differences that are achieved by shifting consumption from a high-price period to a low-price period. The vouchers have an upper limit of XX EUR, are non-transferable, and cannot be exchanged for cash. Participants will receive their remuneration not later than the 28th February, 2026.

Help Luxembourg lead the way in sustainable energy innovation.

What you need to know

Using a control group and treatment group design, we’ll gradually introduce different app features to participants and measure how the type, format, and frequency of information impact their electricity consumption.

Participants will be randomly assigned to a group, and we will monitor electricity usage through Smarty+ devices (smartyplus.lu) to track behaviours and outcomes. All participating households will receive a reward for taking part in the study.

  • Luxembourg residents aged 18+
  • Households with an activated Smarty+ device

  • The Smarty+ is a device that is connected to your smart meter. Upon your consent, it will allows us to access your electricity consumption data. This is necessary, so we are able to evaluate your household’s consumption pattern in order to..
  • Remunerate you for efficient consumption behaviour, e.g., if you conserve or shift electricity use
  • Identify whether the information that was provided affected actual consumption behaviour.

  • Participate in an 8-week study
  • Use the app regularly
  • Be available for a post-experiment survey

  • The study will begin on XX September XXXX and run for a total of 8 weeks.
  • In the first two weeks, no app features will be activated — during this period, we’ll simply monitor energy consumption using the Smarty+ device to understand typical household usage patterns.
  • From week three onwards, participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Each group will gradually receive different app features, introduced in varying orders, to help guide flexible electricity use and test different approaches.
  • At the end of the 8 weeks, the project team will wrap up the study, analyse the results, and start distributing participant rewards.
