2023: A year of achievements at the DSEFM

As we reflect upon the academic journey of the past year, it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we present a summary of the achievements and milestones of 2023 within our doctoral school. The year 2023 has been a period of innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence, marking significant advancements in research, student accomplishments, and institutional growth.

What happened in a nutshell?

13 new Doctors entered the job market…

During the calendar year 2023, 13 Ph.D. students successfully earned their degrees, marking the transition to becoming accomplished scholars and doctors in their respective fields. The Doctoral School in Economics, Finance and Management (DSEFM) warmly congratulates Dr Lisa Obringer, Dr Leda Inga Charaja, Dr Seraphim Dempsey, Dr Bonn Kleiford Seranilla, Dr Gemma Riera Mallol, Dr Simon Petitjean, Dr Aleksandr Ermakov, Dr Ruth Samson, Dr Nikita Gaponiuk, Dr Alper Ünsal, Dr Giuseppe Grasso, Dr Alemayehu Taye and Dr. You Wu.

In the same year, 13 new Ph.D. students joined the Doctoral School: 6 in Economics, 4 in Finance, and 3 in Management. Welcome aboard!

Dr Aleksandr Ermakov won the Best Thesis Award 2022/2023

Aleksandr, who graduated in Finance in August 2023 under the supervision of Roberto Steri, won the DSEFM Best Thesis Award for his thesis, “Risk, Uncertainty, and Valuation in Private Equity: a Multifaceted Approach via Investor Beliefs, Priors, Benchmarking, and Fund Characteristics.” We warmly congratulate him and all the other brilliant candidates who were selected for the Award.

A handbook for supervisors is introduced!

To streamline the administrative aspects of supervising Ph.D. students, the DSEFM has introduced the “PhD Supervision Guidelines” handbook. This resource not only offers practical tools like checklists and timelines for effective supervision but also furnishes comprehensive information spanning from candidate admission to the thesis defense. Printed version to be distributed soon.

18 different courses given at the Doctoral School…

Throughout the academic year 2022/2023, the School organised an extensive repertoire of 18 courses, leveraging the expertise of our internal scholars and hosting distinguished invited professors, namely: Dr Thomas Geelen (Copenhagen Business School), Dr Chiara Morlotti (University of Bergamo), Dr Xiong Jin (University of Manchester), Dr Fabio Mariani (Université catholique de Louvain), Dr Mathias Lerch (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne), Dr J. Fernández-Huertas Moraga (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), Dr Paola Giuliano (UCLA Anderson School of Management), Dr Dominik Hangartner (ETH Zurich), Dr Giovanni Peri (University of California), Sascha Becker (Monash University, Melbourne), and Dr Rutger Poldermans (University of Amsterdam).

… and 21 summer & winter schools financed in 2023

To optimise its students’ opportunities in selecting courses essential for thesis and network development, the DSEFM sponsored 21 summer and winter schools in 2023. These external courses provided students with necessary skills and information crucial to their academic progress.

Upcoming in March 2024! Introducing a job market information session

To enhance Ph.D. students’ preparedness for their post-PhD career, the DSEFM is initiating an annual informational session on the Job Market. This 1.5-hour session, designed for 2nd-year students, aims at equipping them for their transition into the job market. Special emphasis will be placed on addressing the unique requirements and milestones for those considering a career in academia.
