Environmental Policy in the Transport Sector – A Quantitative Approach
Abstract
This lecture focuses on simulating and measuring the effects of environmental policies in the transport sector through abstract models and empirical analysis. It addresses pressing policy questions such as whether the transport sector is contributing fairly to climate efforts, the need for carbon taxes on gasoline in regions like the EU and USA, the environmental justification for banning cars in city centers, the feasibility of carbon-free freight transport, comparisons between rail and air travel emissions, and the environmental impact of local versus overseas products. The lecture distinguishes between local pollution issues, particularly air pollution from cars, and global challenges like climate change, highlighting the need for more transport economists to engage with these critical questions.
