AI and Plagiarism: Issues and Best Practices
Recognizing and avoiding plagiarism is an essential part of being a university student. Plagiarism not only breaks academic rules but also undermines the purpose of higher education: developing your own knowledge, skills, and ideas. By learning how to properly acknowledge sources and responsibly use AI tools, you will strengthen your academic integrity, build confidence in your writing, and prepare for professional and scholarly success.
This course introduces the concept of plagiarism, why it matters, and how it can be avoided in academic work. We will explore different forms of plagiarism—such as copy-and-paste writing, self-plagiarism, and plagiarism involving artificial intelligence (AI)—and discuss their consequences. Special attention will be given to AI tools, which can both create risks of plagiarism and provide new ways of detecting and studying it. Through interactive discussions, practical exercises, and case studies, you will develop the skills to recognize plagiarism, cite sources correctly, and use AI tools responsibly.
