This week, the University of Luxembourg opened its doors to secondary school students from Luxembourg and the Greater Region to give them a unique insight into student life.

During the ‘Université à l’essai’, from 28 to 31 October, participants were able to attend first-year courses in various Bachelor programmes, meet professors and talk to students. Secondary school students could attend courses in nursing, social and educational sciences, law, economy or psychology.  Welcome and information stands were set up for prospective students, and guided tours on the Belval Campus, including the Luxembourg Learning Centre, were organised every afternoon.

For the first time, “student ambassadors” led the guided tours of the Belval Campus. We gathered the testimonies and impressions of two student ambassadors Angelika and Mathieu. They shared their personal viewpoints and answered the students’ questions, which were often about the library, places of student life, admission and the different campuses of the University. Housing was also a recurrent question topic. According to the student ambassadors, students who come for tours most often already know their study programme and with to study at the University of Luxembourg. Through their experiences, the student ambassadors provided real insight into student life at the University.

Mathieu said: “It’s nice to help the students discover the university, the campus, tell anecdotes, talk about places I like. There are two main areas I like to show people: the student lounge, which even current students don’t know much about, and the library, as it’s a beautiful building where you can spend a day working, relaxing and now even eating.”

Angelika described the experience of the Université à l’essai as “very dynamic”. “I liked it – I got positive feedback, a lot of smiles and two students thanked me afterwards, telling me they really liked the tour.” She added: “I really like the Maison des Arts et des Etudiants and I went inside to show them around, and also the student lounge, to give a taste of life on campus. I’m excited for them: I can see that they are eager to come and study here. It’s nice to share!

We understand the students expectations– we still remember our first Welcome Day, the first day of university.

We understand their behaviour, some are shyer. We’re here to support them and understand them better. I think they’re more at ease with students they can talk to,” Mathieu concluded.
