Abstract

Fasting has been part of various cultural and religious traditions for centuries – but what does science have to say about it? In this lecture, Prof Jochen Schneider and Dr Bérénice Hansen present various fasting methods, including Buchinger fasting, intermittent fasting and the fasting mimicking concept. They shed light on the positive effects of fasting on the human body and the biological mechanisms behind it – from cell cleansing to anti-inflammatory processes. In addition, they provide an insight into current research findings that investigate how fasting affects chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, arthritis and long COVID.
