Gustavo BECKER MONTEIRO

Current position

Gustavo Becker is a Doctoral Researcher at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL). He is pursuing a Joint Doctoral Degree between the University of Luxembourg and the University of Amsterdam. He also serves as coordinator of the Business and Human Rights Working Group within the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research.

Research

His research focuses on business and human rights, international human rights law, and international dispute resolution. His PhD specifically examines the use of private dispute resolution methods in cases involving transnational business-related human rights abuses, with a particular focus on the right to remedy

Awards/Distinctions

Gustavo has received a number of awards, including the Maastricht University (UM) NL-High Potential Scholarship to pursue his LLM in Globalisation and Law with a specialisation in Human Rights. He was also awarded a full scholarship by the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law, the Carolyn Lamm full scholarship to pursue an LLM at the University of Miami, and recognition from the UFSC Law School Alumni Association for his excellent engagement in extracurricular activities during his Bachelor studies in Law.

Work experience

Before joining the Luxembourg Centre for European Law, Gustavo worked for the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs (UNCITRAL Secretariat) in Vienna, the Center for Arbitration and Mediation of the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Canada, and Skadden Arps LLP in São Paulo. He also served as a research and teaching assistant in international law at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil.

Educational background

Gustavo holds an LL.M. with honours in International Law and Human Rights from Maastricht University, a MSc in International Law and Sustainability and a Bachelor of Laws, both earned cum laude from UFSC in Brazil.
