Research in Sengupta Lab
Understanding how microbes adapt to and communicate with local surroundings is central to the grand quest for a theory of microbial ecology. Sengupta Lab focuses on developing integrative biophysical frameworks which explain, generalize, and importantly, predicts the if-s, the how-s, and the why-s of microbe-environment interactions, especially relevant for the environmental trends we see today.
Microbial Biophysics of Adaptation to Environmental Changes

Living In Fluctuating Environments
We develop and apply state-of the-art cross-disciplinary approaches, covering the domains of physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, statistics and machine learning, to capture microbial BEHAVIOUR, RESPONSE and RESILIENCE triggered by local environmental variations mimicking those due to shifts in climate and lifestyle choices.
See our short short video profile of the Group, taken during the early days of its inception. Since then, the Sengupta Lab has diversified, on both fundamental and translational fronts.
See list below for details of the projects currently running in the Sengupta Lab.
