Assist. Prof Rui Pedro PEREIRA DE ALMEIDA

Rui Pereira de Almeida is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine at the University of Luxembourg. He serves as Study Program Director for the Bachelor in Health Sciences – Medical Imaging (ATM Radiologie). He is a member of the International Advisory Board of the journal Radiography (Elsevier, Q1).

Rui works within the Allied Health Professions research community in Europe. He collaborates actively with academic and clinical partners across several domains, including the professional development and education of the allied health workforce, evidence-based radiology, and radiation protection and dose optimization. He coordinates initiatives focused on quality management and quality improvement in radiology services, as well as projects aimed at enhancing patient safety and radiological health literacy. His research interests also include bone density and body composition analysis, contributing to interdisciplinary projects related to diagnostic imaging and population health. He has been involved in multiple national and international research projects and actively promotes the integration of innovative training strategies, including simulation-based learning and AI-enhanced methodologies. He is the co-author of over 27 scientific publications (h-index 9; Scopus, January 2026) and actively supports the dissemination of research outcomes in international scientific conferences through hundreds of oral communications and posters.

He contributes to the undergraduate curriculum as a professor in the new Bachelor in Health Sciences – Medical Imaging (ATM Radiology). Launched in September 2025, the programme is in its first academic year in operation, with only the first year of studies functioning. Within this framework, he teaches the courses of General Anatomy, Radio-anatomy, and Simulation Laboratory. He is also responsible for the coordination of clinical placements. In addition, Rui serves as a member of the Bachelor’s jury committee in his capacity as Study Program Director.

In 2016, Rui co-founded the Portuguese Association of Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy (APIMR), where he has since served on the Executive Board as Secretary, actively contributing to the promotion and development of the Radiographer profession. He also participates actively in outreach activities organised by the University of Luxembourg, including events such as the Student Fair, HealthCareers Day, Open Day, and the YEP Schoulfoire. Through these initiatives, he supports the visibility of the ATM Radiology program and helps prospective students discover career opportunities in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy. Beyond academic outreach, Rui has been involved in several training and awareness-raising sessions targeting the general public. These activities aim to increase health literacy among citizens, particularly regarding medical imaging procedures. He remains dedicated to fostering informed decision-making and confidence in Medical Imaging as an essential component of modern healthcare.

Rui received the Certificate of Excellence in 2025, when the Radiography journal team (Elsevier) awarded him a Reviewer Excellence Certificate in recognition of the outstanding quality of peer reviews contributed to the journal. Previously, in 2022, he was the Winner of the Research Award in the category of ‘Best Scientific Paper’ from ROENTGEN – Journal of Radiological Techniques, for the most viewed paper in the 2021–2022 biennium on their digital platform. The awarded article, titled “National research for an evolutionary path of the Radiographer Profession in Portugal,” focused on strategic professional development of the radiology workforce and achieved wide national impact.

Between 2008 and 2020, Rui worked in clinical practice as a Radiographer in different hospitals and private clinics in the southern region of Portugal (Algarve). During this period, he developed solid experience in conventional radiography, imaging-guided procedures in the operating theatre, computed tomography, and bone densitometry. From 2009 to 2019, he served as Invited Lecturer at the University of Algarve. In 2020, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the same university, where he worked until 2025. Throughout this academic stage, Rui assumed multiple institutional responsibilities, such as serving as a member of the Pedagogical Council, member of the Technical-Scientific Council, and as Head of the Radiology Department (2024/2025). He also coordinated the Peer Mentoring Program directed to undergraduate students, was responsible for the radiology laboratories, and integrated the Rectorate-appointed Working Group for Pedagogical Innovation and New Technologies. In addition, he served as member of the Editorial Board of the University of Algarve Press (UAlg Editora), contributing to educational and scientific publishing activities.

Rui obtained his BSc degree in Diagnostic Radiology/Radiography in 2009 from the University of Algarve (PT). In 2012, he completed a Postgraduate specialization in Biomedicine at the University of Beira Interior (PT). He earned his MSc degree in Quality Management in Healthcare Facilities in 2015 from the University of Murcia (SP), with a dissertation focused on the use of continuous quality improvement cycles in radiology departments, exploring strategies for enhancing service performance and patient safety. In 2020, Rui completed his PhD in Health Sciences at the International Doctoral School of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia. His doctoral thesis addressed healthcare quality and evidence-based practice in radiology departments, with emphasis on clinical management, resource optimization, and quality assurance in diagnostic imaging services. In addition, he obtained certification as a Radiation Protection Expert for the Medical Field from CIEMAT (Madrid, Spain) in 2023.
