Affiliate Prof Pascal STAMMET

Pascal Stammet is Clinical Affiliated Professor at the Department of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine. He is also the current Director of Studies of the Bachelor of Medicine. As a part-time position, he shares his worktime between the University and the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), where he has clinical activity as anaesthesiologist–intensive care physician.

His research mainly focusses on post cardiac arrest care through involvement in clinical studies and by investigating molecular changes induced by cardiac arrest in collaboration with different research institutions and partners. The overarching goal of his research is the improvement of patient outcome after this devastating condition with currently sparse outcome.

His teaching activities encompass clinical lectures in human physiology, acute critical and emergency medicine, both in the medical curriculum as well as in nursing sciences. He is member of several PhD supervision committees.

Previous clinical research results of large multicentre studies have led to a direct impact on international guidelines on the care of post cardiac arrest patients. Local research focus lies on improvement of the national health system striving to identify paths and approaches to enhance care for those patients. He is also part of international networks on cardiac arrest research. He has published more than 80 peer reviewed articles as author and co-author. He also serves as active reviewer for intensive care journals.

After his medical and speciality training in Strasbourg, Liège, Luxembourg and Paris, he joined the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) in 2005. Between 2017 and 2021, he became the first medical and health director of the newly created “Corps grand-ducal d’incendie et de secours, CGDIS,” where he accompanied the reorganisation and integration of the prehospital emergency services (“SAMU”). In 2021, he integrated the CHL again and became an invited Professor of Medicine at the University of Luxembourg, for the newly created Bachelor of Medicine. He is the University’s first affiliated clinical professor and has served as Director of Studies of this programme since 2024.

Prof. Stammet obtained his medical degree in 1998 after his university studies in Strasbourg and Liège. He became a board-certified anaesthesiologist in 2004 and intensive care physician in 2005. He also holds a certification as emergency physician from Liège University as well as a certification on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), from Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris. In 2016, he was awarded a PhD in Medical Science at Liège University.
