His research pushes the boundaries of sustainability, circularity and concrete construction. In particular, he uses advanced sensing technologies, digital modelling tools to better understand the behavior and degradation of old concrete bridges. He also develop new rehabilitation methods involving ultra-high fiber-reinforced concrete. Finally, he designs novel structural systems based on reused-concrete elements with radical environmental savings compared to conventional construction methods. Numa Bertola has given more than 30 invited talks worldwide, published more than 20 journal articles in peer-reviewed academic journals (h-index = 12), and was invited as editor for multiple special issues and is member of two technical committees for international civil-engineering associations.
