Assoc. Prof Christophe LEY

Christophe Ley is Associate Professor in Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg. He leads the group Modelling, Interdisciplinary Research, Data Science, Applied Mathematics and Statistics within the Department of Mathematics.

He is an applied mathematician working in the field of statistics/data science, with a strong taste for interdisciplinary work.

In 2007, he has created, with Yvik Swan, the Brussels Summer School of Mathematics
(BSSM) at the Université libre de Bruxelles. The aim of the BSSM is to present, in a
friendly atmosphere, to secondary school students, teachers and university students
different aspects of mathematical sciences and research, as well as their inherent
joy, beauty and usefulness. After 3 students in the first year (2007), the BSSM now
has each year about 100 participants (the 6th edition in 2013 was the last year he
took part in the organization). In 2012, he received the Wernaers Prize for the idea
and organization of the BSSM.

In September 2024, he was invited to the Round Table as a participant at REEL2024 to discuss about digitalization, future and education in Cologne. Furthermore, he participated in several talks and events, such as “MATh.en.JEANS” with high-school students from the Lycée Classique Diekirch, giving valuable insights into his knowledge in the mathematical field.

• 2022: JEO Award for Young Researcher in Basic Science (by ESSKA, the European
  Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy) given to my PhD
  student Hans Van Eetvelde for our paper “Machine learning methods in sport injury
  prediction and prevention: a systematic review”

He obtained his PhD from the Université libre de Bruxelles in 2010, where he had also studied except for the first year, which he did at the University of Luxembourg during its first year of existence in 2003-2004.
