Unveiling Entanglement for Precision Measurements
Abstract:
Multipartite entanglement (ME) is crucial in quantum technologies. However, its detection and characterization are challenging due to the exponential growth of Hilbert space with the amount of resources necessary for their implementation. In this talk, I will provide a conceptual and operational perspective on quantum entanglement, distinguishing it from classical correlations. I will introduce a novel approach to detecting and characterizing ME based on the response of quantum-correlated states to external driving. This method leverages Fisher information, a key quantity in parameter estimation theory, which not only quantifies a system’s sensitivity to parameter changes but also serves as a witness for entanglement. Furthermore, by establishing a direct connection between Fisher information and the structure of entangled states, I will demonstrate how Young diagrams encode the redistribution of Fisher information across different partitions of a quantum system, providing a systematic framework for classifying multipartite entanglement. This method is scalable and experimentally viable, compatible with high-precision measurement technologies such as atomic interferometry.
About the speaker:
Augusto Smerzi is Research Director at the Optics National Institute of the National Research Council (CNR-INO), co-director and leader of the theoretical group of the Quantum Science and Technology in Arcetri (QSTAR) institute, Florence. The group is internationally renowned for the quantum theory of phase estimation and the use of statistical speeds to characterize multipartite entanglement. These results have established the Fisher information as a tool for the characterization of complex quantum states and their metrological usefulness. Furthermore, the group has established expertise in the study of the nonlinear dynamics of coherent matter waves in the context of dilute, trapped Bose-Einstein condensates.
