Prof Thomas SAUTER

Thomas Sauter is a full Professor for Systems Biology at the University of Luxembourg. He is Head of the Systems Biology and Epigenetics group within the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine.

His research focuses on computational biology, especially on molecular network modelling and data integration approaches. Prof. Sauter has published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals (approx. 5000 citations; h-index=31) and has given more than 60 invited talks and seminars.

Prof. Thomas Sauter is the Study Programme Director of two Masters: Master in Molecular and Computational Biomedicine and International Master of Science in Biomedecine.

He is also the main author of the book “Introduction to Systems Biology: Workbook for Flipped-classroom Teaching“, which facilitates the understanding of biochemical networks, metabolic modeling and system dynamics among students. The book starts with basic mathematical concepts, shows how to connect biological entities in structure and time, and finally introduces modelling concepts to tightly align abstraction with reality.

He received the DECHEMA Max-Buchner research stipend and acquired more than 5 Mio Euro of competitive funding from different European, German, and Luxemburgish agencies.

Between 2004 and 2008, he was an independent research group at the Institute for System Dynamics at the Universität Stuttgart, Germany. He joined the University of Luxembourg in 2008.

Prof. Thomas Sauter obtained his Diploma in Technical Biology and a PhD in Control Engineering at the Universität Stuttgart, Germany. As a postdoc he was at the Max-Planck-Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Germany and at the Thomas-Jefferson-University in Philadelphia, USA.
