His current research deals with developing simple models to understand the complex biological phenomenon of pattern formation in various biological contexts. To develop these models, he uses tools of statistical physics and condensed matter physics.

Umang Ashwin Dattani has organized several interesting physics demonstrations for Open Day at The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, 2019. Furthermore, he has served on the core committee of a student chapter at NIT Surat dedicated to science promotion.

Awards/Distinctions
He attained 41st rank nationwide out of more than 10,000 master students in the competitive National Eligibility Test (NET) in Physical Sciences, December 2017. He achieved All India Rank of 37 and 99.67 percentile in the highly competitive Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) Physics entrance exam, February 2017 and got offered Institute fellowships for doing PhD research at several top-research institutions in India.
