About

Inspired by the innovative outcomes of the RFCS (Reearch Fund for Coal and Steel project REDUCE (Reuse and demountability using steel structures and the circular economy [1], the Prefa-SeTi (Steel-Timber Composite Beams project aims to further contribute to the decarbonization of the construction sector and to advance the circular economy by developing demountable, reusable, and sustainable steel-timber composite structures. The project has been funded by Luxembourg’s National Research Fund (FNR and the Luxembourg based company Prefalux through a PhD Industrial Fellowship Grant No. 15695062, and it has received support from ArcelorMittal and MetsäWood. The Prefa-SeTi project introduces a novel concept: a reusable steel-timber composite flooring system. This system consists of downstanding I-shaped hot rolled steel profiles with crossbanded LVL panels on top. These components are connected using newly developed demountable shear connections. The connections are crucial to enable the composite action of the steel beam and the timber slab, to facilitate the disassembly of the structural elements, and to significantly enhance the system’s stiffness and strength.
