Study Programmes Diplôme d’Études Spécialisées en Oncologie Médicale

Learning objectives

The DES in Medical Oncology certifies that the physician in training has acquired the following knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes, as defined in Article 3 of the amended law of 31 July 2020 on the organisation of specialised studies in medicine at the University of Luxembourg.

Graduates will be able to practice medical oncology in all countries of the European Union.

Knowledge

  • Master the theoretical foundations required to practice independently under their own responsibility or within a specialised hospital department in all areas of medical oncology.
  • Understand clinical oncology, including prevention, clinical diagnosis, medical treatment, rehabilitation measures for neoplastic diseases, palliative care, and follow-up monitoring.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the general foundations of other disciplines involved in the treatment of malignant tumours.
  • Understand the legislative, regulatory, and ethical framework governing the practice of medical oncology in Luxembourg.

Skills

  • Adapt knowledge from internal medicine to the specific field of medical oncology.
  • Integrate knowledge within a multidisciplinary approach through effective collaboration with other medical disciplines and healthcare professionals.
  • Interpret scientific publications and reports in medical oncology with rigour.
  • Independently initiate research or development projects and generate new knowledge, skills, and professional competencies.
  • Initiate and lead scientific or professional discussions that contribute to the development of others’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

Professional attitudes

  • Exercise autonomy, responsibility, and rigour in clinical and scientific practice.
  • Adopt a patient-centred approach characterised by listening, empathy, and respect, particularly in palliative care settings.
