Our natural environment in the spotlight of historical research

Environmental history examines the long-term development of the interaction and the impact between humans and their natural or cultivated environment.

About

Traces of human activity have shaped the landscapes of today’s Greater Region – especially since Roman times – but are often not recognizable at first glance. Research at the Institute of History (IHIST) focuses on recording and analyzing these historical cultural landscape elements and investigating long-term climate changes. In addition to written sources and historical maps, current archaeological research results are also included. Digital historical cartography using GIS is a central research method for the projects carried out at IHIST.
